-                      Melinda Cymberbatch-Ramos

“Most of the professors are very nice.  They understand their students. Being a single parent, working and going to school, it’s not easy.  Professors tried to work things out with students. My favorite professor is Ms. Coleman (English). She’s so nice.  She (only one) taught me not to give up. I want to “thank you.”

- D.R.

“It was difficult, but I loved studying at City College. I wish there was a university (San Diego Community University) where students would transfer after City. I would have loved to be there.”

- Fengyan Cen, China, SDSU, BusAcct

“My experience as a college student has been great. Very hard but SDCC has great teachers and great support programs for students.”

“This is a great school for education. I learned so much. The teachers and staff are wonderful.”

                - Ruby E. White

“I took one class on Friday nights because I work onsite a school on Palomar Mt. Once the internet opened up I was able to take multiple classes online and during intersession. This helped when I was sent to active duty,”                            - Russel L Rubio

“Because of people like Gloria Lyon, Susie Fontana in Child Development, Margie Spikes (CARE), Jaime (Calworks), Mary Jane Kruse (New Horizons) and Melodean Young, I have been able to keep my chin up and trying. They have inspired and greatly influenced my goals and supported me in my achievements.”

-Shannon Strom; transfer to SDSU, BS Social Welfare & Criminal Justice

“I enjoyed my time at City – in four years I only missed one day. After being out of school for 30 years, it is a real blessing.  New Horizons, Trio/ASPIRE, and EOPS programs were my family. All of my AODS professors always recalled my name. Being on the Dean’s List made me the most proud.  Thanks to everyone who has and will always encourage me to keep it moving. Thank you San Diego City College.’

San Diego, CA –   San Diego City College graduate Christopher Shipp, a 4th year electrical apprentice and first in his family to graduate from college, earned Gold Medal honors during the 2007 Associated Builders and Contractors National Convention in Nashville, Tennessee. Competing in the distinguished ABC National Craft Championships against seasoned apprentices and craft trainees from around the country, Shipp, 28, was named best-of-the-best in the Electric field in the nation.

Just as he demonstrated the highest-quality workmanship and technical knowledge in his work, Shipp also graduates on Friday, June 1 with Highest Honors of a 4.0 GPA.   In addition to continuing his full-time employment with Rowan Electric, after graduation Shipp will begin teaching Electrical courses for ABC.

Another City College graduate, Wayne Binder, a 4th year plumbing apprentice, competed at his top level and was one of only five contestants of 40 to finish the grueling competitions in the plumbing field.

Shipp and  Binder were judged best in their respective trades at the local San Diego competition and were awarded tools, cash and prizes – along with an all-expenses-paid trip to Nashville to compete in the National event.

City College President Terry Burgess said, “Our apprenticeship programs produce only the most highly-qualified professionals in their field.  Already at graduation, Chris and Wayne are leaders in their field.”
