Proclaiming April 22, 2008 as “San Diego Recycles Day” in the City
of San Diego, Council President Scott Peters honored San Diego City
College as a Recycler of the Year during the 16th Annual Waste
Reduction and Recycling Awards presentation at the morning City
Council meeting.
Along with Council
President Peters, Elmer L. Heap, Jr., Deputy Chief Operating Officer
for Community Services presented the recycling award to City College
Professor Karon Klipple, Environmental Stewardship Committee
Chair; Professor Roberta Alexander Academic Senate Chair, and
Gerald Ramsey, Vice-President of Student Services.
The Environmental Services
Department’s Waste Reduction and Recycling Awards program honored
City College for actively pursuing waste reduction programs that
significantly contribute to diverting waste from the landfill,

The 2008 Recycler of the
Year awards are the highest honor for the most comprehensive,
innovative and/or improved recycling programs. City College was
selected for its commitment to developing and participating in
programs that benefit the environment through education, resource
management, conservation and energy. In 2007, City College was able
to save approximately $25,000 and recycle over 900 tons by
implementing electronic class registration, xeriscape landscaping
and concrete and asphalt recycling.
In its continuing effort
to share information on environmental sustainability with the campus
and the community, on Thursday, April 24
City College will host Earth
Fair ’08 from 10 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
on campus in Gorton Quad at 1313 Park Boulevard. More than 40
local organizations and vendors will hold workshops and
conduct demonstrations. Activities include a SDGE and City of San
Diego-sponsored light bulb exchange, and several hands-on
presentations including how to build worm farms, compost, and trim

Also, on April 24th, Dr. Michael Mooring, Professor of
Biology at Point Loma Nazarene University will present An
Inconvenient Truth from 9:35 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. in D-121. Trained
by Al Gore, Mooring will discuss the current climate crisis and how
to help take action on this problem.
City College’s Environmental Stewardship Committee is dedicated to
developing and participating in programs that benefit the
environment through education, resource management, conservation,
