Hash Named
Women's Athlete of the Week |
The
Pacific Coast Conference has honored women's soccer goalkeeper
Rebekah Hash as its Women's Athletes of the Week.
Hash, a freshman, earned her seventh
shutout victory of the season as the Knight beat Imperial
Valley, 4-0. In the final game of the season, Hash recorded an
incredible 29 saves in a 2-1 loss to Grossmont.

Knights Defeat
Palomar, 1-0 |
The
SDCC women's soccer team won its final home match of the 2008
season by defeating Palomar, 1-0.
The lone goal of the match came in the 21st minute as Anabel
Benitez dribbled through traffic near the goal line and took a
shot from an acute angle that beat Palomar's goalkeeper.
Benitez leads the Knights in scoring
this season with nine goals and three assists. Goalkeeper
Rebekah Hash saved Palomar's two shots on goal.

Knights Lose To
Rival Mesa, 3-0 |
The
SDCC women's soccer team was defeated in a hard-fought match
with San Diego Mesa, 3-0.
In the 38th minute, Mesa's
Yasmina Taketa broke scored the first goal of the match with a
header that Knights' goalkeeper Rebekah Hash could not get to.
In the second half, the Knights
were struck with another header by a Mesa player. In the 61st
minute, it was Danielle Carr who headed in a corner kick from
Candace Newton.
The Knights had a two great
chances to get back into the match, but came up empty on both
attempts. Nancy Alvarado took a shot from 30 yards out that was
saved by Mesa's goalkeeper's outstretched hand. On the rebound,
Corrinne Bollendorf controlled the ball and fired a shot towards
the net, but Mesa's goalkeeper was there again for the save.
Mesa's Tuesday Jost scored the
final goal in the 88th minute.

Knights Rout
MiraCosta, 8-0 |
The
SDCC women's soccer team snapped a four-game losing streak with
an 8-0 victory over visiting MiraCosta.
MiraCosta was short-handed as it started only eight players and
SDCC took advantage early and often. Seven minutes into the
match SDCC's Maricela Diaz de Leon took a shot that the
goalkeeper could not handle and bounced into the goal.
In the 22nd minute, Anabel
Benitez found herself on a breakaway and beat the goalkeeper for
the Knights' second goal. A similar play happened in the 35th
minute as Rachelle Padilla took the ball on a MiraCosta throw-in
and broke free for a goal.
In the second half, Vanessa De La
Garza used her left foot to fire in a goal off a pass from
Benitez in the 48th minute. Thirteen minutes later, De La Garza
scored again after dribbling around the goalkeeper to find the
open net.
The Knights added three more
goals in the final 16 minutes of the match. Benitez put one
through in the 74th, Diaz de Leon found the back of the net in
the 76th and Nancy Alvarado added the final goal in the 83rd
minute.

Knights Tripped
Up by Grossmont, 4-0 |
The
women's soccer team held off several attacks by Grossmont and
went into the half tied 0-0, but the Griffins finally broke
through the Knights' defense with four goals in the final 26
minutes of the match.
The Knights came close on two
occasions, but they slightly missed the target. Defender
Rachelle Padilla took a shot from the top of the box that missed
the top left corner of the goal by two feet and Anabel Benitez'
shot went just wide, also from the top of the box.

Lady Knights Put
Up 10 on MiraCosta |
|
The women's soccer team earned its
first conference victory on Wednesday with a 10-0 result against
MiraCosta. The visiting
Knights were led by sophomore forward Anabel Benitez who scored
three goals. Five others also found the back of the net
including; Maricela Diaz De Leon (2), Andrea Marin (2), Adriana
Coelho, Nancy Alvarado and goalkeeper Rebekah Hash.

Knights Dropped
by Cuyamaca, 2-1 |
The
Knights jumped on Cuyamaca with an early goal, but could not
keep pace in the second half as the Coyotes scored two
unanswered goals to win.
SDCC came out aggressively in the first half and benefited
quickly as sophomore forward Anabel Benitez knocked in a goal in
the sixth minute that came off Nancy Alvarado's corner kick.
The Knights' Andrea Marin had a
great opportunity to put in a second goal in the first half, but
was off balance as she kicked the ball over the cross bar.
Possession in the second half was
dominated by Cuyamaca and kept the Knights' defense on its
heels. SDCC goalkeeper Rebekah Hash did her best as she kept
several of Cuyamaca's shots from entering the goal, but in the
62nd minute Priscilla Guerra recieved a pass inside the 18-yard
box and was able to beat Hash. Later in the half, the Coyotes
were awarded a penalty kick which Kristi French put in to give
Cuyamaca the lead and eventually the win.

Knights Lose
Conference Opener |
The
women's soccer team allowed two late first half goals and could
not recover as they lost to Miramar, 3-1.
The Knights held off Miramar's
attack for most of the first half, but in the 42nd minute it was
Jessica Brown who ended the scoreless tie with a shot that went
over Rebekah Hash's head. Three minutes later Miramar's Carly
Walters scored from 20 yards out and put the Jets ahead 2-0 at
the half.
The Jets didn't let up as they
increased their lead to 3-0 five minutes into the second half on
a header from Marisa Matkin. The Knights fought back, however,
and earned a penalty kick in 83rd minute when Anabel Benitez was
brought down inside the 18-yard box. Benitez beat Miramar's
goalkeeper with a shot that went in through the bottom right
corner of the goal.
Although the Knights kept the
pressure on Miramar, they weren't able to score again.

Knights Tied Up
by Saddleback, 1-1 |
The
Knights went ahead 1-0 in the second half, but could not stop a
late rush by Saddleback as they tied the match in the final
minutes.SDCC forward
Anabel Benitez created several opportunities for herself in the
first half, but could not find the back of the net. The Knights'
defense held strong as they did not allow a shot on goal.
In the 65th minute, Benitez got
the goal she had been looking for. After a misplay by a
Saddleback defender, Knights' forward Andrea Marin controlled
the ball and found an open Benitez who drove a low shot into the
bottom right corner of the goal.
After stopping several attempts
by Saddleback, the Knights' defense was caught out of position
on a rebound that bounced out to Gauchos' forward Ashley Novak
who kicked in the equalizer in the 87th minute.

Quinonez
Named Athlete of the Week |
The
Pacific Coast Conference has announced that San Diego
City College women's soccer player Jeanette Quinonez was
selected as a Women's Athlete of the Week for the week
ending on September 7.
Quinonez, a sophomore
defender, came up big for the Knights in a match against
Los Angeles Valley as she knocked in the tying goal in
the final minute. That match ended in a 1-1 tie.
Quinonez was also strong on the defensive side as she
helped the Knights shutout San Bernardino Valley, 3-0.

Knights
Score Late Goal to Even Score |
The
women's soccer team fell behind 1-0, but a late goal by
Jeanette Quinones tied Los Angeles Valley, 1-1, and
saved the Knights from their second loss of the season.
The first half was mostly a
defensive stuggle which saw no goals. The Knights did
create a couple of opportunities, but were unable to
capitalize on them. Los Angeles Valley scored the first
goal of the game nine minutes into the second half on a
ball that was kicked from about 35 yards out that went
over the head of Knights' goalkeeper Rebekah Hash.
After falling behind, the
Knights turned up the offensive pressure and created
several opportunities near the goal. In the 90th minute,
SDCC forward Anabel Benitez sent in a cross that found
its way to Quinones who tapped it in for the equalizer.

The fall 2008
season will mark Coach Milburn’s fifth year as Head
Women's Soccer Coach at San Diego City College. Milburn is a
native of San Diego, graduating from Valhalla High School where
she played soccer for the Norsemen in addition to running Cross
Country and Track & Field. As a youth, Milburn played “Club”
soccer for various teams throughout San Diego County, spending her
High School years with the FC Bratz “Dream Team”.
After High
School, Milburn attended Regis University in Denver Colorado on an
athletics scholarship. She received her Bachelor of Science Degree
in Psychology from Regis while playing both intercollegiate Soccer
and Lacrosse. Milburn made a trip to the NCAA Division II Final
Four in Soccer and served as the Lacrosse Team Captain for two years.
Milburn went on to receive her Master’s Degree in Physical
Education from Azusa Pacific University in San Diego, Calif.
Coach Milburn has been an adjunct professor of Health
and Exercise Science in the San Diego Community College
District for the past three years, teaching a range of both lecture and activities
classes. Milburn brings much experience to SDCC, having played
soccer since the age of four and coached at various recreational
and competitive levels. In addition to her current teaching and
coaching duties at San Diego City College, Milburn is the
Assistant Women’s Soccer Coach at Steele Canyon High School as
well as the Head Coach of the Girls U12 and Girls U13 Albion club
teams. |
