Two of the Knights' right-handed
pitchers were selected by MLB teams in this year's draft. Dustin
Mercadante was drafted in round 41 by the Boston Red Sox and
Matt Veltmann was chosen in the 46th round by the New York
Yankees.

Knights Record
1st PCC Victory |
Following
a six-game winning streak the SDCC Knights opened Pacific Coast
Conference play with three straight losses to Grossmont,
Palomar, and Southwestern. In a goodwill game exhibition game
against the Spanish National Team, the Knights won 4-3 behind
the offense of Jon Bernetskie.
On Saturday, March 1, the Knights
defeated Imperial Valley College, 10-9, for the first PCC
victory of the 2008 campaign. Right-handed freshman pitcher
Ashkon Kuhaulua (pictured) threw three strong innings as second
baseman Anthony Long came through with a clutch base hit in the
top of the ninth inning which drove in Ricardo Aguilar and Jeff
Taylor to solidify the victory.

Dew Named PCC
Athlete of the Week |
The
Pacific Coast Conference has announced that freshman outfielder
Ryan Dew has been named as its Men's Athlete of the Week for the
week ending on February 17.
Dew had five hits and scored
three runs in a 12-4 victory over Orange Coast on Saturday,
February 9. The following day in the championship game of the
Jaguar Classic, Dew came through in the clutch with a one-out
double in the bottom of the eleventh inning that scored the
winning run. |

Last weekend, the SDCC Knights
won four home games to win Southwestern College's Jaguar Classic
for the second time in three years.
Sophomore Dustin Mercadante picked up his second win of
the season by throwing six strong innings in the first game of
the weekend against Arizona Western. The Knights' offense came
through with six runs on 10 hits to defeat Arizona Western, 6-2.
In game two, Sophomore Tristen Esaias earned his third victory
in his third start in defeat of East Los Angeles, 8-1. Marshall
Harvey collected two hits including a triple and two RBI.
Freshman second baseman, Anthony Long, had two hits, a walk and
scored two runs.
Left-hander Lucas Whitmore
recorded his first collegiate victory against Orange Coast
College in a 12-4 win. Center fielder Ryan Dew collected five
hits and scored three runs to lead the Knights' offensive attack
that included a season-high 16 hits. Allen Coons, Harvey, Jeff
Brokaw each had a multiple hit game.
The championship game matched the
Knights against El Camino. SDCC came through in the bottom of
the eleventh inning on a one-out double by Dew that brought in
Whitmore from second base to end a game (11-10) which saw
several lead changes throughout. Erilio Mesa recorded his first
collegiate win by pitching strongly in the final three innings.
The Knights extended their win streak to six games and are
currently 8-3 on the season. City is off this weekend and return
to action next Wednesday, February 20 as they host the Spanish
National Team.

Knights' Pitching
Hurls 2 Shutouts, Win 3 of 4 |
The SDCC Knights played
double-headers on both Friday and Saturday and came away
victorious in three of the four games. On Friday, the Knights
hosted Cerro Coso and swept both games, 8-3 and 1-0. In the
first game, third baseman Marshall Harvey and shortstop Bobby
Glaze each collected three hits. Tristen Esaian picked up his
second win of the season by pitching five innings and allowing
only one run on four hits with seven strikeouts.
Dustin Mercadante and Cheyne Gorski combined to throw a 3-hit
shoutout in a 1-0 win against Cerro Coso in game two.
On Saturday, SDCC dropped a tough one, 7-6, against West Los
Angeles. The Knights missed great opportunities in the seventh
and eighth innings as the left the bases loaded.
In the final game of the weekend, SDCC defeated Pasadena 10-0.
Matt Veltmann collected his first collegiate victory, throwing
six strong innings and striking out a total of eight Pasadena
batters. Marcus Kelley closed the game and solidified the
shutout. Offensively, the Knights were sparked with timely
hitting in the third inning with a 3-run homerun by Oscar Roman.
The Knights went on to score five more runs in the third inning
and two more in the seventh to cap the 10-0 victory.
This weekend the Knights will continue their homestand with four
games. On Friday, they will take on Arizona Western at 10 a.m.
and then Orange Coast at 2 p.m. SDCC will play East Los Angeles
at noon on Saturday and College of the Desert at 11 a.m. on
Sunday.

Knights Begin
2008 Season This Weekend |
|
The San Diego City college baseball
team opened up its regular season last weekend at the 2008
Caballero Classic hosted by Arizona Western College in Yuma,
Ariz. On Friday, January 25, the Knights were defeated by Pima
College 12-7. They then played a double-header on Saturday
against Arizona Western, which they split. The Knights won the
first game 4-0 and Arizona Western won the second 10-4. They had
contest scheduled for Sunday morning against Eastern Arizona,
but it was cancelled due to rain.
On Friday, February 1, the Knights
will begin a 12-game homestand with a double-header against
Cerr0 Cos0. For full schedule with times please

Knights Heat Up
in Hawaii With No-hitter |

The 2008 Knights opened the season
with an exciting trip to Honolulu, Ha. The Knights departed
January 15 from San Diego and spent seven days in sunny Hawaii.
The trip included spring training at the AlaWai Community
Baseball Field, two exhibition games, team building activities,
and sightseeing. The first
exhibition game was against Austin College (Sherman, Texas), a
Division III college and 2007 champions of the Southern
Collegiate Athletic Conference. Pitchers Austin Mercadante, Matt
Veltmann, Erilio Mesa and Tristen Esaian combined to throw a
no-hit shutout and the Knights' offense was explosive as they
totaled 12 runs.
On January 21, the Knights played Hawaii Pacific University, a
four-year college. San Diego City was defeated 8-6 in a highly
competitive game.

Chris
Brown
is in his 18th year of coaching at the
Community College level. He began his career in 1990 as an
assistant coach at Saddleback College, located in Mission Viejo
California. During Brown’s seven-year stint at Saddleback the
Gauchos won two Orange Empire Conference Championships and State
Champion runners up in 1998. In 1995 Brown was selected the
first Head Coach at El Paso Community College (TX). Brown was
responsible for the successful start up of the EPCC athletic
program. The “Tejanos” rapidly developed and with a 23-20
overall record in just their second season and advanced to the
NJCAA Region V playoffs.
Brown enters his ninth season as the Head Coach at San Diego
City College. Over the past four seasons the Knights have
continually improved to a respected power in the Pacific Coast
Conference. In 2006, SDCC finished 16-9 in conference and 22-18
overall. The Knights also earned a spot in post season play. Over the past five seasons seven players from SDCC
program have been professionally drafted.

University first baseman DAVID DENNIS, an alumnus of San Diego
City College, and a two time Pacific Coast Conference All-Team
Selection, has been named Sooner Athletic Conference baseball
player of the week for Feb. 25-March 2.
Dennis, a
senior, smacked seven home runs and drove in 20 runs in six
games for the Stars last week. He batted .652 for the week and
also had four doubles to add to his amazing 1.435 slugging
percentage.
For the season,
Dennis is hitting .403 with 12 homers and 41 RBIs. Dennis ranks
third nationally in the NAIA in home runs and RBIs, and sixth in
total bases.
